Our alpacas - Garlic (white suri) Horace and Troy (faun huacayas) and Ches (chocolate huacaya)

Jenny and Roger have owned cats for nearly forty years and, until recently, ran a very successful boarding cattery.  Of the thousands of cats we have cared for one breed has stood out above all others - The Bengal.  Its intelligence, beauty, variety of colours and markings, its personality and relationship with humans won us over and made us resolve, when we retired from the boarding cattery business, to immerse ourselves  in Bengals and to try to improve the breed.

As the breeding of Bengals is a hobby (obsession) rather than a business we try to restrict the numbers of breeding cats we have so that our cats can remain as pets rather than breeding machines.  To ensure that the small stock we have is of the highest quality we have gone to some of the best known breeders of Bengals and have even imported from Canada.  We now believe we have really outstanding queens and studs producing beautiful kittens of the highest quality with stunning markings and colours, with excellent body conformation and of the best temperament and genetic background.

We live in a tranquil village between Dover and Deal in The Garden of England, Kent.  We welcome visitors and are happy to talk Bengals without any obligation or hard sell at all.  We are also more than happy to show visitors our other animals and have no shame about being absolutely crazy about animals.  During the 30 years we have lived in this village we have had ducks, geese, turkeys, rabbits, sheep, horses, donkeys, goats, alpacas, dogs and a variety of domestic indoor birds.  A selection of our current animals is shown on this page.

Sammi 1970? - 2007

Sadly Sammi, our beloved donkey, died on Friday 21st December 2007.  He was in his late thirties.  Sammi came to us from the Donkey Sanctuary in Sidmouth and quickly established himself as a member of our family, loved by us, our children and more recently our grandchildren.  Although sweet-natured and affectionate he also had that fabled donkey trait of obstinacy.  In 1989 he and our goats, dogs, chickens and ducks were signed up to perform in a film version of a Barbara Cartland novel, “The Lady and the Highwayman”, shot at Dover Castle.  Fearful of forgetting his lines Sammi refused to board the specially hired limousine (all right, it was a horsebox).  He locked his legs and neither coaxing nor force could get him into the horsebox and he had to be replaced by his understudy, Primrose.  Sammi therefore missed out on starring alongside fellow actors such as Emma Samms, Oliver Reed, Claire Bloom, Christopher Cazenove, Lysette Anthony, Gordon Jackson.

Sammi with Horace

Although most of his life Sammi was a lone donkey, for the last five years he shared his paddocks and stable with Shandy, an elderly donkey owned by a friend of ours.  Sammi and Shandy did a wonderful impersonation of Two Grumpy Old Men, ostensibly unable to stand each other but secretly inseparable buddies.  When Shandy died in early 2007 we were concerned about the effect on Sammi, but fortunately our alpacas accepted Sammi as an honorary camelid and he became one of their gang.  He particularly favoured Garlic, whose white fleece helped Sammi overcome the problems of his failing eyesight and who acted as Sammi’s guide dog.  While Garlic grazed Sammi would often just rest his head on Garlic’s back.

Sammi was always by our sides in the paddock, nuzzling up to us and pushing his face against ours.  He will be sorely missed but we thank the Donkey Sanctuary for having given us the privilege of sharing some twenty years of our lives with this lovely, gentle creature.
